Econ Brothers Data Wrap Up 4/16/12
Though today's most significant economic release, retail sales, was solid, the other reports were sloppy and disappointing. The Empire mfg index fell to 6.6 in April from 20.2 in March. The orders sub-index was essentially flat at 6.5. Production, workweek and order backlog were all weak. The earnings reports were subpar as three of the five reports missed. It is no surprise then that that equity market is flat on the day.
A multitude of financial instruments in the US is spreading to the EU. France will now have a futures contract tied to its long-term sovereign debt. The hope is that this will boost liquidity. The fixed income capital markets deteriorated in the EU. Spain’s CDS has priced in a 37% chance of a default on their debt in the next five years.
